Mononucleosis, also known as Mono, often referred to as the kissing disease, is transmitted through saliva in kisses or sharing utensils and cups, and it’s often most contagious in teenagers or young adults. Someone with mono may show symptoms for two to four weeks, but they could remain contagious for up to three months after symptoms subside. This blog covers a few symptoms that could lead to your needing Mono testing in Saint Petersburg and where you can get tested.
The following symptoms are indicative of Mono:
- Fever of 102 to 104-degrees Fahrenheit or higher
- Body aches and muscle soreness
- Swollen, red sore throat
- Extreme fatigue
- Severe headache (it might feel like a chronic migraine)
- Swollen lymph glands in the underarms and neck
- Dry, persistent cough
- White patches on the tonsils or tongue
Some people infected with Mononucleosis may also feel extremely nauseous and disinterested in food. If the fever gets too high, it could cause chills, hallucinations, and there’s a risk of seizures.
How Do Doctors Test for Mononucleosis?
Most doctors will test for Mononucleosis with bloodwork. It’s called a Monospot, a blood test that checks for antibodies created by your body to fend off the virus. Doctors can also check over a patient for tell-tale signs, but the bloodwork will definitively show a positive or negative result.
What’s the Treatment Plan for Mono?
Unfortunately, there’s no definitive treatment plan for Mono. The virus has to run its course, but doctors can help you manage symptoms with pain relievers and fever reducers. Otherwise, you should treat Mono like a bad cold, which means plenty of fluids and lots of rest.
If you’re feeling under the weather and suspect Mononucleosis might be the culprit, come down to Polmed Primary Care & Walk-in Clinic for Mono testing in Saint Petersburg. While we accept walk-ins, you can also call to schedule an appointment at (727) 339-2054.
I’ve been going to CC, a Nurse Practitioner, Denise, and Sarah, at Dr. Kaszuba’s office for a long time now. I just want to say how I love this office. I found out about the office when I took an elderly patient here for her visit. They were so welcoming, I decided to switch to them for my doctor even though I live in Pinellas Park. I’ve always received the best care here.
