What Is Urinary Tract Infection?
Urinary tract infections, or UTIs, are a common kind of urinary system infection. UTIs can involve different urinary system parts – the ureters, kidneys, urethra, and bladder. The symptoms will usually include:
- Pain during urination
- Frequent urination
- Pain in your lower back or side
For most UTIs, treatment may involve a round of antibiotics.
While the urine usually does not include bacteria, urine is a byproduct of the body’s filtration system, which is the kidneys. As excess water and waste products get removed from the body, urine is created. Normally your urine can move throughout your system without contamination. However, if bacteria get into the body, it can lead to inflammation and infection, such as a UTI.
UTI Testing and Treatment
When you come in to see us at the clinic, the physician may use a urinalysis or urine culture test. These tests are made to diagnose UTIs. If the infection does not respond to treatment or you end up getting the infection repeatedly, you may require more testing to see what else is going on.
Some of the common options for UTI treatment include:
- Amoxicillin
- Doxycycline
- Nitrofurantoin
- Sulfonamides
- Cephalosporins
- Bactrim®
- Cipro®
No matter what, you must follow the directions for taking any medications prescribed to get the results you need to begin healing. You should never stop taking antibiotics because you feel better or the symptoms disappear. Without a full round of antibiotics, the infection can return.
